HPV and Oral Cancer
The rising incidence of oropharyngeal cancer, specifically oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), is a significant concern for the health care community. HPV has a 63% association with oral cancers of the tonsils and base of tongue. This is particularly true for white males aged 40 to 59, which is four times higher than in women. It is higher amoung younger adults, and for those individuals with a high lifetime number of sex partners.
Early detection significantly improves 5-year survival rates. As part of an initial and annual dental exam, Dr. Jeffrey C. Hambleton completes a thorough hard and soft tissue examination, including the lymph nodes of the head and neck. It is important for patients to report persistent sore throats, difficulty swallowing, ear pain, enlarged lymph nodes, or unexplained weight loss. Dr. Hambleton completes biopsies of suspicious lesions, and makes referrals to medical practicitioners for symptoms suggestive of OSCC. He also discusses the risks for oral cancer associated with smoking and heavy alcohol consumption.
Millions of Americans have missing teeth. The importance of your teeth cannot be understated – we use our teeth to chew our food, to speak, and to boost our confidence. After all, there is nothing quite like a complete set of beautiful teeth.
The gold standard to tooth replacement are dental implants. Dentists have offered implants for over 20 years to enrich lives and improve the health and smiles of individuals across the country.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are an artificial replacement for the root of your tooth. The implant post is surgically embedded into your jawbone to provide a permanent restoration with a more natural look and feel.
In terms of cost, dentures may initially seem to be the most practical choice. However, in the long run, dentures are a cause of great concern as they contribute to the shrinkage of gum tissue and the ongoing deterioration of your supporting bone. Dental implants, on the other hand, actively stimulate the bone in the same way that your original teeth did, helping to preserve bone tissue and promoting your overall oral health.
Dental implants also do not require replacement. Once your implant has been placed, all you need to do is practice good oral hygiene to ensure that your implant lasts for a lifetime.
In order to receive an implant, you must be in good oral health, with healthy gums and bone tissue capable of supporting the implant and holding it in place.
